Last chance for UN to avoid war

UN Security council has few hours left to announce a second resolution demanding Iraq's immediate disarmament.

President George Bush has called the meeting as " a moment of the truth for the world". He will be addressing to the American people and the world later tonight regarding the final ultimatum to Iraq.

Are we convinced with powell's Report?

The case presented by United State's Secretary of State Colin Powell to the United Nation was not enough to start the bombing of Iraq. skeptics Around the world need more substance to be convinced. It is difficult for the American public and also for people around the world to accept Colin Powell's Evidence, Due to the fact that United Nations inspectors in Iraq did not find any hard evidence after months of investigating.

People around the world want the UN inspectors to be given more time in Iraq before taking any drastic actions.

Colin Powell's Report: Truth or Propaganda

Key points from his 70 minutes presentation:

  • "Saddam Hussein and his regime are doing everything they can to make sure the inspectors find absolutely nothing."
  • "Saddam Hussein is determined to get his hands on a nuclear bomb, Iraq already possessed two of the three components needed to produce a nuclear bomb, and was now focussing on acquiring sufficient fissile material needed for an explosion."
  • "Saddam Hussein has biological weapons and the capability to rapidly produce more, many more. And he has the ability to dispense these lethal poisons and diseases in ways that can cause massive death and destruction. If biological weapons seem too terrible to contemplate, chemical weapons are equally chilling."
  • "Saddam Hussein has chemical weapons. Saddam Hussein has used such weapons and Saddam Hussein has no compunction about using them again against his neighbors and against his own people."
  • "Iraq today harbors a deadly terrorist network headed by Abu Musab Zarqawi, an associate and collaborator of Osama bin Laden and his al Qaeda lieutenants."

Iraq's Response

Iraqi UN ambassador Mohammed Aldauri 's reaction:

  • "Mr. Powell's statement on weapons of mass destruction are utterly unrelated to the truth"
  • "It is important for me to remind that programs for weapons of mass destruction are not like an aspirin pill, easily hidden."
  • "As for the supposed relationship between Iraq and the Al Qaeda organization, I would note what his excellency, President Saddam Hussein, said. : "If we had a relationship with Al Qaeda and we believe in that relationship, we would not be ashamed to admit it. We have no relationship with Al Qaeda."
  • "to sell the idea of war and aggression against my country, Iraq, without any legal, moral or political justification. "

Iraq face war say experts

According to experts, the United States will most likely to attack Iraq, possible in the next two month. Experts also predict that United Sates are very likely to secure a new UN resolution, which allows an invasion with the reservation of France, russia, China and Germany.

Experts do not see the likelihood of Saddam Hussain giving up to United States's threat for possible attack, "The horse is already out of the barn." said Sarah emerson (Energy Security Analysis). "The invasion will take place and if the U.S. feels that it can...then they will definitely go for a second resolution that gives more credibility nationally".

"If they don't feel they can get that, then they won't ask, there is more of a coalition than public statements imply. When push comes to shove, countries will get on the bandwagon because they want to be part of the peace".

Give us (Iraq) a Fair Trial

Iraq wants the United States to present evidence to United Nation of any weapons of mass distractions. If there are any hard evidence, the United Nation arms inspectors are welcomed to carry out further investigation.
Foreign Minister Naji Sabri told Secretary General Kofi Anann that US is capable of putting false evidence to mislead the world , therefore giving the US a reason to attack Iraq. Secretary of State Colin Powell is preparing to give United Nation new Evidence that Iraq does have weapons of mass destruction. This new evidence will be handed to UN on 5th February 2003.

Warnings from Aid Agencies

The British aid agencies are getting ready for crisis if USA with other nations did go to war with iraq. Iraqi people are already suffering from the Sanctions imposed on them after the gulf war.

Estimated 15 million people or more are heavily dependent on food aid and the number will dramatically increase if there was a war.

Bush Determined to Attack Iraq

George Bush is preparing USA for war against Iraq and will do so without the backing of United Nation if necessary. He said " The course of this nation does not depend on the decision of others. Whatever action is required, whenever action is necessary, I will defend the freedom and security of the American people.

He also said that USA will not attack Iraq alone." We will consult, but let there be no misunderstanding, if Saddam Hussain does not fully disarm for the safety of our people, and for the peace of the world, we will lead a coalition to disarm him".

Lack of Support

Not many American people are backing George Bush's policy on Iraq. Nearly a year ago, he had the support of more than 80 percent of the American people.

Several countries with France and Germany in the frontline have expressed their concern for the military action against Iraq. French President Jacques Chirac is against the military action without the UN resolution.
